Should Elmo Be On Welfare?

In the first prsidential debate last week there was one issue that got alot of press when candidate Mitt Romney said he would eliminate funding to the public broadcasting system.  His comment got laughs, criticism and support.

Tax funded pbs cost the tax payers around 450 million dollars annually.  The critics of defunding pbs say that funding makes up such a tiny portion of federal spending and pbs provides educational programs to those who are poor.  While these are valid arguments, those who support the end of federal subsidies to pbs argue at a time where the nation is on the verge of financial collapse can we afford any unnessary federal spending and there are so many other sources for this kind of programming.

We as a nation, if we are to be serious about getting the nation out of this enormous debt must make sacrifices.  If we cannot cut pbs, what can we cut.

This debate on pbs reminds me of some people who are in debt up to their neck , but they will let more important bills fall by the wayside and they will pay there cable bill just to keep the tv on.

Whether it's government or John Q. Public we have to put our priorities in order.  We must start somewhere in conquering this financial mess we find ourselves in.
