Poverty Prevention

Poverty has been a plague on humanity since the beginning of time.  Throughout the ages faith organizations, charitable organizations and governments have battled poverty.

There are two dominant ideas on how to combat poverty.  One philosophy is to help the needy by proividing them with basic needs of food, housing, medical care, and clothes.  Another philosophy is to provide the needy with the skills so they can provide for themselves the basic nessecities of life.

In the battle to help those in need, it seems that poverty prevention is not mentioned as often as taking care of the problem of poverty after the fact.

But when you want to find out how to prevent poverty you may want to consult a wise man named Solomon.  Many thousands of years ago Soloman spoke to the issue of poverty prevention, in the book of proverbs there are several passages giving instruction on how to prevent poverty. In chapter 6 he speaks of :  Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.  How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard?  when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?  Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.  In chapter 20 he writes: Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty, open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

There are no easy solutions to the problem of poverty, but prevention is the best solution.
